Dear Mr. Staunch Republican,
I apologize that I do not know your name. The only things I do know are where you work, where you work out, and how livid you are about Barack Obama. We have never had a real conversation about politics, instead you have invoked your opinion on me about Obama, and instead of using a clearer head I invoked mine on you about Sarah Palin.
I am not
writing this letter to gloat about my guy winning but instead out of fear and
worry that if both sides are unable to come together under a new administration
then all of what it means to be an American might be lost.
The few times we have engaged one another you have preached about socialism. You have commented on how someone dare give your hard earned money to people who are too lazy to get jobs. You also made the comment that it wouldn’t surprise you if Obama had been “sitting” on his dead grandmother for weeks; waiting for just the right time to get the sympathy vote. I did not tell you then how appalled I was at that comment alone, but I will tell you now.
You like many, but of course not all of the Republicans I have encountered have chanted over and over again what is wrong with Obama. His ties to Ayers, his socialist policies, his anti-war stance but not once have you told me why “your” guy was the right man for The White House. You never tried to show me why McCain was a better pick and at the end of the day when you look back maybe you’ll see that was the real mistake of the Republicans as a whole.
I wonder how many hours you or your friends spent campaigning for McCain? How
many phone calls you made? How many doors you knocked on? How many people you
drove to the voting booth on Tuesday? I wonder if you personally did
everything in your power to help your guy make it to The White House.
I only ask because I did get the message out. I knocked on doors, and made phone calls to strangers. I participated in every way I could in order to really support the issues important to me. I did it along with the young, old, smart, and not as educated but we all believed in one thing. We need change and to us Obama is that change. Obama’s win not only confirms that America has already changed; it also shows that politics as a whole have changed. This victory shows that no amount of money alone can win you an election. You need supporters motivated, and spreading your message and not just spreading talking points and anger.
I do hope that in four years we both can look back at the man in The White House and be able to say he made our country better. That even though half of the country didn’t see it, agree with it, we are better for it. Or you can tell me that you told me so and that not only did I get it wrong but so did our country. What I really hope for now is that you and I can get past the socialism and lipstick on a pig and only wish and work for what is best for our nation as a whole, because the healing must begin now; and hopefully it begins with us.
Well Wishes,
(Obama supporter)
